I can just imagine the art director for this poster... "Ja, ja, make sure the monsters are on this poster, especially Godzilla's son... but make sure you get some cheesecake on there, too, for people who don't like giant monsters!"
And the inserted photo at the bottom is probably the only cheesecake this movie had to offer!
I'm about to admit something rather embarassing... this movie came out while I was in the Navy. I was serving on an aircraft carrier at the time, and we were out at sea when the movie premiered... however, we did return while it was still playing, and my best friend at the time and I went out to see the movie the day the ship came back in port.
Unfortunately, I had stayed up all night the night before, trying to get my circadian rhythms back in order after the kind of odd shift I would work out at sea...
...and you've probably guessed it. I fell asleep during Godzilla 1985. In the theatre. I don't remember how long it was before I actually saw the whole movie from start to finish. I must have been exhausted!
I really wish I had larger photos of all the various Mexican Lobby Cards... just to show the detail!
Can you imagine what a modern-day remake of King Kong Vs. Godzilla could be like, with the modern-day SFX? Of course, they'd have to explain why Kong was so much larger, but they have also scaled down Godzilla since these days, haven't they?
"Mightiest Monster in All Creation"? I don't recall any incarnation taking on Ghidorah single-handedly and winning...
And "Ravaging a Universe for Love"? Mothra never went off-planet that I ever recall, not even in the more recent Mothra movies...
I guess the US distributors figured they had to do something to sell a movie about a giant moth that wouldn't have moviegoers saying, "Oh, a giant moth? Big deal, build a giant candle and light it at night, and the thing will fly into the fire and burn itself up."
Rule #1 of advertising (well, at least for advertising movies, anyway): If your whole marketing campaign is based on something being a mystery, don't reveal the mystery in your choice of stills for the lobby cards.
